Hi, that is the general advise ive been given also, however i have read that people have achieved this but had to install the Sophos XG Home “Software” ISO and not the “hardware” ISO as the hardware one performs a check if its sophos hardware and denies installInstalling a fresh ssd into the box, and installing the software ISO off a bootable CD apparently goes in as just a normal intel based software install, ive not tried it and cannot confirm this to be correct, more just what i have read.thanks. Hello Michael, thank you for your very useful blog about UTM and XG.

I am fan of UTM for a long time. Now i bought new quad-core MOBO with J1900and have a great dilemma. Currently i am running UTM Home edition at home, with approx 20rules, turned on IPS, web proxy, also web server protection, site-to-site VPN and SSL VPN for remote access on old dual core atom processor. I’d like to ask you for your experience, if it its worth to migrate to current v16 of XG.

I am still not convinced what benefit could be for me. It is radical performance with all features turned on on XG I can get? Or something else? What is beneficial in current version of XG? Can you share your experience please. Some time has passed and Sophos made some improvements on XG so what do you think about v16 of XG comparing to current UTM?Thank you. Hello Michael, may i ask you for some guidance and help?

As i have new quadcore MB, I am considering to turn on web filtering feature for HTTPS scan and decrypt. To be honest, I’ve tried to set it up couple of times, but always i end with results which makes me nuts as most of the https webpages including internet banking were blocked, displayed incorrectly of course with certificate issuesit makes me crazyand thats the point, could you guide me, send me some reference how to set it up? I’ve thought to have UTM box as certificate authority or I have also windows server 2012 R2 so maybe I can set it there.

I’d like to understand how to configure it on UTM and how to deploy certificates to users/laptops etc so it will work properlywould you be so kind.I appreciate any help.maybe one thingHTTPS scan and decrypt works like a charm on all devices like Apple macbooks, Adnroid devices, Windows machine except iOS devices. I am not able to make it running.

In logs I always see something like that:“http” request=”(nil)” function=”readrequestheaders” file=”request.c” line=”1586″ message=”Read error on the http handler 80 (Input/output error)”I’ve checked to skip certificate checks under exception tab and also imported certificate from into iOS devices but unfortunatelly without luck.so do you have any advices?Thank you.

Hi folksI have an interesting problem.I have a Synology 1517+ NAS sitting behind a SophosUTM appliance. The UTM has correct firewall configuration to let through key NAS services - admin access, file access, etc. Normally I can access Synology's Drive service (equivalent to Google Drive but running on my own server) outside my home network with no issues. The problem happens when I want to share files from Synology Drive.

The file share creates a link to the file as seen in the screenshot below. The problem is that this link cannot be accessed outside my LAN.

Sophos

Access outside my LAN throws a 'ERRCONNECTIONRESET' error.I have checked ports used by Synology Drive and it's all the same ones I already have opened. Given the issue only happens when accessing outside my LAN, I place this firmly at the feet of Sophos.Any advice much appreciated.TIA.

So, live log says no rules are being fired off that may point back to a cause? Most times, issues such as these are caused by ports that need to be open that need to be explicitly opened or allowed by rule.I had a user needing to access files on an AWS server.

The files were being accessed via HTTPS. However, once authenticated, it flipped over to a not so well known port, and the connection was dropped.

Symptom: “User can’t browse to this site!”I’d keep trying to make that connection from outside your LAN using a hotspot or VPN and check the logs again. Sophos is pretty good at giving you what you need to know in order to figure things out. What version of the firmware are you running?. I have a feeling it's something like this.Live logs appear to show blocks from SOME external ports generated on my phone to my NAS port 5000 when I access these Drive shares. But then other external ports on my phone go through fine to the same internal port 5000 when I either access normal Drive functions or NAS admin, etc.Is it possible that Drive share functionality is using the internal Synology web server (which it is) which is in turn calling some ports that I haven't opened?Firmware is 7 updates behind 😲. Yes, have checked all these except APT.After more playing around last night it appears drive access requests are not even hitting the firewall at all and getting blocked - I'm not seeing any blocks or entries with IP addresses for my external device. When I use my phone to connect to standard Drive features or Synology admin, I'm seeing successful firewall access entries according to my rules. So it's almost like access to Drive share links is failing somewhere earlier, before it even gets to the firewall. Ok, I've worked out the problem!!Well sort of.The Synology Drive service requires an alias on my domain to be enabled to use sharing links.

Sophos Firewall

So to access share links it uses the following URL:Using the above URL outside my home network, I get the error in my OP. Works fine inside my LAN though.HOWEVER, if I add port 5000 (my Synology admin/Drive) port to the above URL so it becomes, everything works outside my network!!Is there a reason why the /drive alias works inside my LAN but not outside?.
